Clyde Johnson
Clyde Johnson is a jewelry designer based in Baltimore, Maryland. He is a North Carolina native who was raised in Petersburg, Virginia and moved to Baltimore as the Assistant Dean for Diversity at MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art). He began exploring the Art Jewelry classes in the continuing studies program at MICA and it “soon became an obsession of the exploration of the history of hand-fabricated, cast, electroformed and die-formed designed art jewelry.”
After four years of hands-on education, Clyde expanded from small wearable works to large-scale wearable sculpture for a fashion show. He says: “My work centered on the cultural exploration of the history of slavery and lynching. This new chapter in my life has allowed me the ability to explore the histories of people in the African diaspora, my ‘folks’ from North Carolina and my new community of Baltimore.”
