Mingei, Hamada and Leach: International Waves of Influence
Craft in America presents a talk with scholar Chiaki Ajioka on Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamads’s travels to the US, and the international transmission of Mingei. The talk is moderated by Center Director Emily Zaiden.
Chiaki Ajioka is an independent art historian, curator and translator, specializing in modern Japanese crafts and prints in an international context. She has been preparing a book on Mingei outside Japan as an aesthetic dialogue across Japan, Britain and the USA, focusing on Bernard Leach’s first visit to the USA in 1950 and his return visit with Shoji Hamada and Soetsu Yanagi in 1952-53. She has published essays on the topic in English and Japanese.
