School Outreach Showcase: Artwork by Van Nuys and Fairfax High School Students
Now in its second year, Craft in America’s School Outreach Program has grown to include both Fairfax High School Visual Arts Magnet and Van Nuys High School this year. This exhibition highlights artwork created by students at both schools throughout the past year. Working with our partners in the LAUSD public school system, students had the opportunity to meet nationally recognized artists from our episode series as well as local artists who carry on important traditions and craft legacies.
During field trips to the Center, classes toured current exhibitions featuring artists ranging from John Cederquist, Marvin Lipofsky, Steven Portigal, and Julie Chen to master instrument makers like Kamaka Hawaii and Martin Guitar Company. In a series of in-class workshops, students made prints with Yoshiko Yamamoto, built kaleidoscopes with Center Coordinator Sebastian Duncan-Portuondo, and diagramed ukuleles with Paul Fuller.
